MYP Students

Transforming Ideas into Action Through the IB MYP

Within the MYP framework, students develop strong conceptual understanding, connect learning to real-world contexts, and learn essential ATL skills. Through service as action, students grow into empathetic contributors, while a focus on language, identity, and inclusion ensures every child feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

Concept-Based Learning

Within the IB MYP, students develop deep conceptual understanding by exploring significant ideas across eight diverse subject groups—Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design. Through inquiry and global contexts, students apply learning to authentic, real-world situations.

Development of ATL Skills

A defining characteristic of an IB learner is the development of Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills. We equip students with the tools for success: research, communication, collaboration, and self-management skills, enabling them to become independent, reflective, and lifelong learners. Students gain a competitive edge in eAssessments and future DP exams through strong time management and critical thinking skills.

Service, Inclusion, and Holistic Growth

Through Service as Action, alongside a strong focus on identity, language, and inclusion, students develop empathy, social responsibility, and intercultural understanding. The programme ensures that every learner feels valued, supported, and empowered to contribute meaningfully to their community.

Passion to Purpose

The MYP encourages students to transform their interests into meaningful action — most powerfully through the Personal Project. This culminating experience allows students to demonstrate ownership, creativity, and independent learning as they pursue a passion with real-world impact. These are precisely the qualities top universities worldwide actively seek.

FAQs

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11–16 and focuses on conceptual learning and interdisciplinary understanding. It builds on the foundation laid by the PYP and offers a more structured IB MYP syllabus that encourages students to make connections between their studies and the world around them. The MYP emphasises on critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and the development of communication skills, preparing students for the Diploma Programme or the Career-related Programme.

In the MYP, students engage with a broad and balanced curriculum that includes eight subject groups: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design. This structure ensures holistic development, allowing students to build strong academic foundations while also nurturing creativity, physical well-being, and practical problem-solving skills.

Global contexts are a key feature of the MYP that connect classroom learning to real-world issues and situations. They provide meaningful frameworks through which students explore topics such as identities and relationships, globalization, sustainability, and scientific innovation. By learning through these contexts, students develop a deeper understanding of global challenges and their role as responsible global citizens.

Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills are essential life skills embedded across all subjects in the MYP. These include research skills, communication skills, critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and self-management. ATL skills empower students to become independent learners, equipping them with the ability to organize their work, think analytically, and communicate effectively in diverse contexts.

Assessment in the MYP is criterion-based and aligned with IB standards. Rather than focusing solely on marks or grades, it evaluates students’ understanding, skills, and application of knowledge against clearly defined criteria. This approach provides meaningful feedback, helping students recognise their strengths and identify areas for growth, thereby promoting continuous improvement.

The MYP builds a strong foundation for the Diploma Programme (DP) by developing essential academic and personal skills. Students learn how to research effectively, analyse information critically, and express their ideas clearly. The emphasis on inquiry, reflection, and independent learning ensures that students are well-prepared to meet the rigorous demands of the DP.

The MYP encourages critical thinking by engaging students in inquiry-based learning. Students are challenged to ask questions, explore multiple perspectives, evaluate evidence, and make informed decisions. Through concept-driven teaching and real-world applications, learners develop the ability to think deeply and solve complex problems.

MYP students participate in a wide range of dynamic and engaging learning experiences, including hands-on projects, scientific experiments, research investigations, and interdisciplinary units. These experiences promote active learning, creativity, and collaboration, ensuring that students can apply their knowledge in meaningful and practical ways.

At MLSI, the MYP offers a rich blend of concept-driven learning, global perspectives, and strong academic rigour. The programme is designed to nurture curious, reflective, and confident learners who are well-prepared for the challenges of the Diploma Programme and beyond. With a focus on holistic development, MLSI ensures that students grow not only academically but also as responsible and compassionate individuals.
