Middle Years Programme (MYP)

Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) aims to assist students in developing their personal understanding, emerging sense of self, and community responsibility.

The Middle Years Programme: Nurturing Capable, Independent Thinkers

At Mount Litera School International, we understand that ages 11 to 16 are the most defining years in a child’s journey. Therefore, we go beyond standardised approaches to offer a deeply personalised pathway through the IB Middle Years Programme. Built on the globally recognised MYP curriculum, our approach combines academic rigour with inquiry-based learning secondary school framework—ensuring students develop the clarity, confidence, and capability to excel in life.

MYP Students

Conceptual understanding across disciplines

The Middle Years Program curriculum focuses on conceptual understanding. Students explore big ideas across eight diverse subject groups—Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design—applying them to global contexts.

Mastery of ATL skills

What truly differentiates an MLSI student is their mastery of ATL skills (Approaches to Learning). We explicitly teach the tools for success: research, collaboration, and self-management, enabling students to become independent, reflective, and disciplined learners. Students gain a competitive edge in eAssessments and future DP exams through superior time management and critical thinking.

Passion to purpose

At the heart of our IB MYP school is the belief that every student deserves a bespoke trajectory. This culminates in the Personal Project, a capstone experience where MYP 5 students dive into a personal passion under expert mentorship. Whether they are coding an app, composing a score, or launching a community initiative, they demonstrate a level of academic maturity and ownership that top universities worldwide actively seek.

The programme builds strong conceptual understanding, connects learning to real-world contexts, and develops essential ATL skills. Through service as action, students grow as empathetic contributors, while a focus on language, identity, and inclusion ensures every child feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

Independent Thinkers on Clear Paths

Starting from MYP 3, students receive dedicated career and university counselling, helping them explore pathways, make informed subject choices, and build clarity well ahead of the DP or CP, a distinct advantage not commonly offered at this stage. Through enhanced profile-building and focused career guidance, we turn every student's strengths into a clear future pathway. The result: more than strong academics—students gain career clarity, leadership confidence, and the skills to thrive in a complex world as articulate, thoughtful, and compassionate individuals, fully prepared to progress into the Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme* (CP).

FAQs

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11–16 and focuses on conceptual learning and interdisciplinary understanding. It builds on the foundation laid by the PYP and offers a more structured IB MYP syllabus that encourages students to make connections between their studies and the world around them. The MYP emphasises on critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and the development of communication skills, preparing students for the Diploma Programme or the Career-related Programme.

In the MYP, students engage with a broad and balanced curriculum that includes eight subject groups: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design. This structure ensures holistic development, allowing students to build strong academic foundations while also nurturing creativity, physical well-being, and practical problem-solving skills.

Global contexts are a key feature of the MYP that connect classroom learning to real-world issues and situations. They provide meaningful frameworks through which students explore topics such as identities and relationships, globalization, sustainability, and scientific innovation. By learning through these contexts, students develop a deeper understanding of global challenges and their role as responsible global citizens.

Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills are essential life skills embedded across all subjects in the MYP. These include research skills, communication skills, critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and self-management. ATL skills empower students to become independent learners, equipping them with the ability to organize their work, think analytically, and communicate effectively in diverse contexts.

Assessment in the MYP is criterion-based and aligned with IB standards. Rather than focusing solely on marks or grades, it evaluates students’ understanding, skills, and application of knowledge against clearly defined criteria. This approach provides meaningful feedback, helping students recognise their strengths and identify areas for growth, thereby promoting continuous improvement.

The MYP builds a strong foundation for the Diploma Programme (DP) by developing essential academic and personal skills. Students learn how to research effectively, analyse information critically, and express their ideas clearly. The emphasis on inquiry, reflection, and independent learning ensures that students are well-prepared to meet the rigorous demands of the DP.

The MYP encourages critical thinking by engaging students in inquiry-based learning. Students are challenged to ask questions, explore multiple perspectives, evaluate evidence, and make informed decisions. Through concept-driven teaching and real-world applications, learners develop the ability to think deeply and solve complex problems.

MYP students participate in a wide range of dynamic and engaging learning experiences, including hands-on projects, scientific experiments, research investigations, and interdisciplinary units. These experiences promote active learning, creativity, and collaboration, ensuring that students can apply their knowledge in meaningful and practical ways.

At MLSI, the MYP offers a rich blend of concept-driven learning, global perspectives, and strong academic rigour. The programme is designed to nurture curious, reflective, and confident learners who are well-prepared for the challenges of the Diploma Programme and beyond. With a focus on holistic development, MLSI ensures that students grow not only academically but also as responsible and compassionate individuals.
