The Extended Essay

The true power of the IB Diploma Programme lies in its three core components that challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding. The extended essay is a serious piece of academic research and writing wherein students independently research and investigate a topic of interest to produce a 4000-word in-depth study.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

The Theory of Knowledge offers students an opportunity to reflect on the nature of knowledge by critically examining how we know through different ways of knowing and across various areas of knowledge. Students who develop awareness of their own perspectives act responsibly in an increasingly interconnected world.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

CAS involves students in an array of different activities such as community service, sports, and creative pursuits alongside their academic studies, thus fostering an appreciation of life beyond the classroom. Together, these experiences cultivate intellectual curiosity, ethical thinking, and a strong sense of purpose—key pillars of IB university preparation.

FAQs

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a two-year pre-university course for students aged 16–19. It offers a rigorous and balanced IB Diploma curriculum that develops academic knowledge, critical thinking, and global awareness, preparing students for higher education and success at leading universities worldwide.

Students in the DP study six subject groups, including languages, sciences, mathematics, individuals and societies, and the arts. This balanced structure allows students to specialise in areas of interest while maintaining a broad academic foundation across multiple disciplines.

The DP Core is a central part of the programme and includes Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). These components develop critical thinking, research skills, and personal growth beyond traditional academic subjects.

The Extended Essay (EE) is a 4,000-word independent research project where students investigate a topic of interest in depth. It helps develop advanced research, writing, and analytical skills, providing valuable preparation for university-level coursework.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) encourages students to explore how knowledge is created, evaluated, and understood across different subjects. It develops critical thinking by prompting learners to question assumptions and consider multiple perspectives.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is a core component of the DP that involves participation in creative pursuits, physical activities, and community service. It helps students develop teamwork, leadership, and a sense of social responsibility beyond academics.

Assessment in the DP includes a combination of coursework, internal assessments, and final examinations, all aligned with IB standards. This approach ensures that students are evaluated on both their subject knowledge and their ability to apply it effectively.

The IB Diploma is widely recognised by universities worldwide because it develops strong research, analytical thinking, and independent learning skills. Its rigorous and internationally benchmarked IB Diploma curriculum prepares students well for the academic demands of higher education.

Students in the DP develop advanced skills such as critical thinking, research, academic writing, time management, and problem-solving. These skills not only support academic success but also prepare students for future careers and global opportunities.

The DP at MLSI offers a strong combination of academic rigour, personalised guidance, and dedicated university counselling. Students are supported throughout their journey, ensuring they are well-prepared for admissions to leading universities and future career pathways.
